I origins (2014) is an American science fantasy drama. The story revolves around Ian Grey and his research into the evolution of the human eyes. Through this he ends up meeting Sofi, a young woman, at a party and takes a  picture of her eyes. Later he uses her eyes to track her down, then forming a relationship with her. Later she dies when the lift to her apartment stops between floors and as they climb out it falls, ripping half of her body of. The film then skips to seven years later where Ian is now married to his lab partner Karen. She has a baby and when their baby is born the hospital takes an iris scan of him. The results are entered in the database and the program identifies the baby as a certain Paul Edgar Dairy. The nurse re-enters the results and the problem disappears. He is later 'tested for autism' however we later find out this isn't true. Ian tracks some pictures from this test to Idaho where he stumbles on the family of Paul Edgar Dairy, who apparently died just before their baby was conceived. They then consult Ian's old friend who runs this database to see if there are any other similar cases and it is found that Sofi's eyes have been recently used in India. Ian goes to India to find the subject of this scan. There he finds Priya, the head of the community centre where the iris scan was made. Priya recognizes Sofi's eyes as those of a girl she knows, named Salomina, and agrees to help. Ian and Priya begin searching for Salomina, who is an orphan and seems to have disappeared into the crowds of the city. Ian tries putting up a billboard showing Sofi's eyes and offering a cash reward. He is besieged with calls but none are credible. Weeks later he comes across a little girl staring at the billboard. It is Salomina. He takes her back to his hotel and contacts Karen over Skype. The two of them conduct a simple test designed to reveal if Salomina might be somehow linked with Sofi. At first Salomina is uncannily accurate, but in the end her results are within the probable range of random chance. Karen asks him how he feels about this and he says he feels foolish. Ian then leaves the hotel room with Salomina to take her to Priya but when they reach the elevator, Salomina panics and throws herself into his arms. They cling to each other, crying, and he picks her up and takes her down the stairs instead.

The film is very complicated but links the ideas of science vs religion into a very simple concept.

Analysis of opening scene
  • Opening credits are in white writing with a plain black background
  • Cut to extreme close up of an eye
  • Camera zooms in on eye
  • Cut to another extreme close of on another eye and again, camera zooms in
  • This happens 3 more times with different eyes
  • Medium close up behind Ian in his work room and there is a slow zoom in
  • Cut to close up of his face
  • Extreme close up of the screen (a link is being typed in)
  • Close up of screen (over the shoulder)
  • Cut to shot looking at Ian's face from the perspective of the computer webcam and this is a close up until Ian moves his face closer to create an extreme close up
  • Picture from Ian's life are inserted: One of a close up of his child's face, medium close up of him  and his child, medium close up of him in his lab
  • Cut back to him in his work room, close up of hand on mouse (handheld camera, shaky quality and slightly follows his hand movements)
  • Extreme close up of hand on mouse again, handheld
  • A video which we assume is from Ian's childhood is inserted and is shaky to create authenticity and the effect of it being a home video. Starts as a birds eye view because it's an adult holding the camera videoing a small child, moves down and zooms in on child's hands playing with camera and camera moves up to close up of child's face, cut to shot of child with camera, he is looking up to the camera so high angle shot, cut to same thing just lower down and to the left.
  • Hundreds of extreme close ups of eyes are added
  • Close up on a pair of eyes
  • Cut to title - white writing with black background

  • Non digetic voice over and violin music
  • Noise added for the snapping between the hundreds of extreme close ups of eyes.
