Conventions of Film openings

  • Establishes the main character/s and rough location and time period

  • Entices the audience to continue watching

  • Establishes the genre through sound, mise-en-scene and usually the title as well

  • Usually starts with equilibrium

  • A key event will occur - this will set the basis for the plot

  • Film openings will always show logos or identification of the production companies and often the distribution companies involved in the production of the media text.

  • In opening scenes of films there is usually sound. Non-diegetic and diegetic sound. Non- diegetic is the most common as it helps set the scene for the audience and conveys the type of genre and what to expect in the film
